French President Emmanuel Macron described the announcement of a ceasefire in Iran today, Wednesday, as "very good" and called for its full respect "in the coming days and weeks" in order to negotiate with Tehran on all outstanding security issues, insisting that it should fully include Lebanon.

At the start of a meeting of the Defense Council, he said: "In the coming days and weeks, we expect complete respect for the ceasefire throughout the region, allowing negotiations that lead to a lasting resolution of nuclear, ballistic, and regional issues related to Iran, which France has consistently advocated since 2018."

He added: "What we hope for is to ensure that the ceasefire fully includes Lebanon over the long term."

The United States and Iran both announced on Wednesday that they had achieved a victory after agreeing to a two-week ceasefire in exchange for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, in a truce that Israel said it supports while confirming that it does not include Lebanon.

Shortly after the ceasefire announcement, U.S. President Donald Trump told Agence France-Presse by phone, "It is a complete and total victory. 100 percent. There is no doubt about that."

He affirmed that the issue of Iranian uranium would be fully resolved, but he refrained from saying whether he would renew his previous threats to destroy Iranian power plants and bridges if the agreement fails. He also suggested that China may have pressured Iran to return to the negotiating table to reach the ceasefire.

Tehran, for its part, declared that it had achieved "a great victory," with the Iranian Supreme National Security Council stating that "the enemy has suffered an overwhelming and undeniable historical defeat."

Iranian authorities said on Wednesday that talks with Washington would begin on Friday in Pakistan, the main mediator in the Middle East conflict that erupted on February 28 and has claimed thousands of lives. However, the warring parties remain at odds.
