The Lebanese flashpoint: Israel’s threats, NATO strains, and France’s bold intervention

From Katz’s “Yellow Line” threats to Macron’s strategic maneuvers and U.S.-Europe rifts, the Lebanese conflict now stretches from the Litani River to the Strait of Hormuz—reshaping alliances and testing global diplomacy.

Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz escalated his threats toward southern Lebanon, stating that the Israeli army "will establish a security zone inside Lebanon and will control the entire area up to the Litani River."

Katz, in a statement on Tuesday, March 31, threatened that all homes in villages near the border "will be destroyed," mirroring what occurred in Rafah and Beit Hanoun in the Gaza Strip.

"Yellow Line" in southern Lebanon

Katz's statement reignited Lebanese concerns, noting that the Israeli plan is not tied to ambitions of establishing Greater Israel, but rather to an economic buffer zone 5 km deep within Lebanese territory, dubbed the "Trump Economic Zone." Similar to the Gaza Strip, fears intensified due to reports of an Israeli plan to establish a "Yellow Line" in southern Lebanon, resembling the border with the Gaza Strip.

In southern Lebanon, a war continues, yet its resolution may not come on the battlefield, as its impact spreads to the emerging tensions among NATO members, particularly between France and the United States. U.S. President Donald Trump's remarks about the potential U.S. withdrawal from NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) triggered European responses reaffirming their commitment to the alliance, emphasizing that it is "a military alliance not formed to violate international law."

Trump said in an interview with the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph on Wednesday, April 1, that he is seriously considering the U.S. withdrawing from NATO after allied countries failed to support U.S. military action against Iran.

"Full Hearts"

"The straw that broke the camel’s back" sums up the fragile relationship now linking Washington with most European NATO members. Signs of tension abound, including President Trump's confirmation that France refused U.S. planes carrying military supplies to Israel permission to fly over its territory. Trump stated clearly that France has been entirely uncooperative regarding "the Butcher of Iran," who was successfully eliminated, adding, "The U.S. will remember."

The relationship between Trump and Macron has never been smooth, and this has spilled over into tensions between the two countries on international issues, with Lebanon bearing the brunt, as the White House closed the door on the French initiative to halt the Israeli war on "Hezbollah."

There is no doubt that the outcomes on the ground will shape the definition of the Lebanese entity, and what Katz declared is tied to what his army accomplishes in timing the drawing of the "Yellow Line." Alongside the military maneuvers, however, French diplomacy is clearly being activated, with Macron using intermediaries to pursue a solution to halt the war and move toward a final settlement of the ongoing conflict.

The French approach to Lebanon goes beyond the notion of the "tender mother," encompassing strategic interests outlined by Macron following the port explosion on August 6, 2020. His visits yielded results that included investments by French companies, notably Total for oil exploration and extraction, and CMA CGM, a global leader in maritime transport.

South Korea revealed on Friday, April 3, significant coordination with Paris on implementing operational measures concerning the Strait of Hormuz. This French initiative is viewed by Paris as crucial to solidifying the "Strait of Hormuz for a Lebanese settlement" equation—but the question remains: will the French succeed in their mission?
