The Prime Minister of Iraq, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today, Wednesday, to summon the acting U.S. Ambassador in Iraq and deliver a strongly worded formal protest note following the bombing of the Habbaniyah military clinic.

Spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Sabah al-Numan, stated: “Despite Iraq’s ongoing political and practical efforts to stay clear of the regional conflict, and alongside the government’s diplomatic efforts to achieve a ceasefire and restore security, stability, freedom of trade, and regional and international economic exchange, these condemned attacks on our military forces have continued. The latest of these was the heinous aggression this morning targeting the Habbaniyah military clinic, affiliated with the Ministry of Defense—a crime that resulted in the martyrdom of several and the injury of Iraqi army personnel.”

He added that “the government and the armed forces have the right to respond using all available means in accordance with the UN Charter, and they will not remain silent over the sanctity of our heroes’ blood. We are facing a full-fledged crime that violates international law in all its definitions and frameworks governing relations between states, and it harms the relationship between the peoples of Iraq and the United States of America.”

Al-Numan clarified that “these actions will only lead to further challenges and obstacles to efforts aimed at achieving sustainable stability in the region,” adding that “a documented complaint, supported by evidence and detailed information, will be submitted to the UN Security Council and the international organization to affirm Iraq’s rights and those of its people against these violations.”

Earlier today, a strike targeted a Popular Mobilization Forces base in Anbar province in western Iraq.

The Iraqi Ministry of Defense stated that “the Habbaniyah military clinic and the Habbaniyah Works Division, part of the Habbaniyah Site Command, were subjected to a criminal airstrike followed by aircraft cannon fire. The attack resulted in the martyrdom of seven of our heroic fighters and the injury of 13 others while they were carrying out their national and humanitarian duties. Rescue teams are still searching at the site of the incident.”

The Ministry stated that "this targeting constitutes a blatant and dangerous violation of all international laws and norms that prohibit attacks on medical facilities and their personnel, representing a serious escalation that requires a firm response and accountability for those responsible."
