The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) announced on Monday the death of one of its soldiers from a shell explosion at its sites in southern Lebanon, noting that the source of the shell remains unknown.
In a statement, the force reported: "A peacekeeper was tragically killed, and another seriously injured last night following a shell explosion at a UNIFIL site near Adchit al Qusayr."

UNIFIL stated: "We do not yet know the origin of the shell. An investigation has been initiated to determine the circumstances of the incident."
UNIFIL urged "all parties to fulfill their obligations under international law and to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and property at all times, including refraining from any actions that may endanger peacekeepers."
The force's spokesperson, Kandice Ardiel, had earlier informed Agence France-Presse that "a shell exploded at one of our sites in Adchit al Qusayr," noting that injuries occurred.
The official National News Agency reported that a strike targeted the Indonesian battalion headquarters in Adchit al Qusayr.
The war in the Middle East extended into Lebanon on March 2, after Hezbollah fired rockets into Israel in response to the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on the first day of the American-Israeli attack.
Israel responded by launching extensive raids on Lebanon.
Apart from the raids, Israeli forces have entered several towns in southern Lebanon, with officials announcing their intention to establish a security zone reaching the Litani River, about thirty kilometers from the Israeli border, to push back Hezbollah fighters and protect residents in northern Israel.
Hezbollah, in turn, reported engaging Israeli forces that have penetrated Lebanese territory and targeting them.
Since the latest war between Hezbollah and Israel began, UNIFIL has repeatedly reported its sites being hit by shells, most recently on March 23, when the force stated that its main headquarters in Naqoura was struck by a shell suspected to have been fired by a "non-state entity."
On March 7, three Ghanaian soldiers were injured in a shooting in a border town in southern Lebanon.
