India resumes Iranian oil imports amid Middle East supply disruptions

India's Ministry of Oil stated on Saturday that the country's refineries have purchased Iranian oil amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has disrupted supplies through the Hormuz Strait.

India, the world's third-largest oil importer and consumer, had not received any shipments from Tehran since May 2019, following U.S. pressure to refrain from buying Iranian crude oil. However, supply disruptions caused by the U.S. and Israel's war have severely affected the South Asian nation.

In a post on the 'X' platform, the Ministry of Oil remarked, "Amid Middle East supply disruptions, Indian refiners have secured their crude oil requirements, including from Iran; and there is no payment hurdle for Iranian crude imports."

Last month, the United States temporarily lifted sanctions on Iranian oil and refined products to ease supply shortages.

The ministry stated that India has secured its entire crude oil requirements for the coming months.

"India imports crude oil from more than 40 countries, and companies have full flexibility to source oil from different regions and geographical areas based on commercial considerations," the ministry added.

India also purchased 44,000 tons of Iranian liquefied petroleum gas loaded on a sanctioned vessel. The ministry reported that the ship, which docked at Mangalore port in western India on Wednesday, is unloading the fuel.

New Delhi maintains good relations with Tehran but has steadily expanded cooperation with Israel in defence, agriculture, technology and cybersecurity.
