Three Iranian officials — including President Masoud Pezeshkian, the head of the judiciary Gholam-hossein Mohseni-Ejei, and a senior jurist from the country’s legal council — will oversee Iran’s transitional period following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, state television reported on Sunday, citing advisor Mohammad Mokhber.

Mokhber stated that this trio will include Masoud Pezeshkian, the head of the judiciary Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, and a lawyer from the Guardian Council.

On Sunday, Tehran confirmed Khamenei’s death in an unprecedented attack launched by the United States and Israel on Iran, to which it responded by targeting the Jewish state and several Arab countries.

Iranian state television confirmed the news of Khamenei's death after it was announced earlier by U.S. President Donald Trump, while the Revolutionary Guard promised a "severe punishment" for those responsible.

Mourning for 40 Days

A 40-day mourning period has been declared in the country. Iranian media had earlier reported the killing of Khamenei’s family members.

Later, Tehran also confirmed the deaths of Iranian Revolutionary Guard Commander Mohammad Pakpour and Khamenei’s advisor Ali Shamkhani.

With the news of his death spreading and later being announced by the United States, cheers and cries of joy erupted in several streets in Tehran, according to videos verified by Agence France-Presse.
