Organizers of the Davos Forum announced on Monday that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will not take part in the summit scheduled for this week in Switzerland, saying his participation would not be “appropriate” in the aftermath of the recent deadly crackdown on protesters in Iran.

The World Economic Forum said on X: “The Iranian foreign minister will not participate in Davos,” adding that “although he was invited last fall, the tragic loss of civilian lives in Iran in recent weeks means it is not appropriate for the Iranian government to be represented at Davos this year.”

Global attention is now focused on the Alpine resort of Davos, where the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) is being held - an event that for more than five decades has become a global platform for political and economic decision-makers and a laboratory for ideas shaping the world economy and international order.

U.S. President Donald Trump is heading to Davos to discuss the latest developments at a summit bringing together an elite group of leaders amid shifts he has triggered in the global system. His first appearance at the WEF in six years comes as a crisis deepens over his push to annex Greenland.

Other leaders at the mountain resort are expected to discuss further changes during Trump’s first year in office, from tariffs to Venezuela, Ukraine, Gaza, and Iran.

What is the Davos Forum?
Founded in 1971, the World Economic Forum is one of the world’s most prominent gatherings, bringing together heads of state and government, leaders of international organizations, top business executives, and policymakers, alongside experts in economics, technology, and climate. For a full week, the quiet Swiss resort becomes a global hub for strategic debates about the future of the world.
