Haibat Al-Halbousi elected Speaker of Iraq’s Council of Representatives
The Iraqi Council of Representatives elected Haibat Al-Halbousi as its Speaker on Monday. The Council carried out the vote counting and sorting process, resulting in Al-Halbousi’s election as Speaker for the sixth parliamentary term.
The parliament held its first session to elect a Speaker and two Deputy Speakers, with 292 deputies attending out of 329 who won in last November’s elections. The session was chaired by the eldest deputy, Amer Al-Fayez, who closed nominations and announced the candidacies of Al-Halbousi, Amer Abdul-Jabbar, and Salem Al-Issawi for the position of Speaker.

The head of the Azm Coalition, Muthanna Al-Samarrai, withdrew his candidacy during the session. Speaking in parliament, Al-Samarrai said, “For the public interest, I announce my withdrawal from the candidacy for the Speaker of the House in its sixth term.”
