Why was Mojtaba Khamenei absent from his father’s funeral?

Iran’s new Supreme Leader has remained out of public view since the war began, with sources citing serious injuries sustained in the attack that killed his father and heightened security concerns over his absence.

Iranian sources told Reuters on Friday that “Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is recovering from serious injuries he sustained during an attack targeting him, but he has not yet regained his full health to the extent that would allow him to appear in public,” noting that “security agencies are restricting his public appearances out of concern over any new US attacks.”

The sources explained that “the whereabouts of Mojtaba Khamenei, who was announced as Iran’s Supreme Leader by a council of clerics one week after the killing of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, remain a mystery to Iranians, as he has not appeared in public since the outbreak of the war.”

Despite the release of written statements in Mojtaba Khamenei’s name, no photos, video footage, or audio recordings of him have been published since then, raising questions about his health condition and his role in the coming period.

According to the sources, “Mojtaba Khamenei was seriously injured in the same attack in which his father was killed. The injuries caused facial disfigurement and severe damage to his limbs, and he is still in the recovery phase,” Reuters reported.

His absence comes at a time when he was expected to appear during his father’s funeral ceremonies, which were held in the city of Mashhad in northeastern Iran, where Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was buried at the holiest shrine in the Islamic Republic, amid a large public turnout.

Ali Khamenei was killed in the first strikes of the war launched by the United States and Israel on February 28, before Washington and Tehran reached a ceasefire agreement last month.
