Marine Le Pen's 2027 presidential bid in doubt after Paris court ruling

The far-right leader receives a public office ban and an ankle tag sentence in a European Parliament funds case, putting her potential bid to succeed Emmanuel Macron in the 2027 presidential elections under renewed uncertainty.

The Paris Court of Appeal on Tuesday imposed a 45-month ban from holding public office on far-right leader Marine Le Pen, including 15 months with immediate effect, in a case involving the misuse of European Parliament funds. The ruling theoretically allows her to run in the 2027 presidential election.

However, her participation in the presidential race remains uncertain, as the court also sentenced her to one year in prison under electronic monitoring, a measure that limits her ability to campaign.

Le Pen, who is considered by many opinion polls to be the leading contender to succeed Emmanuel Macron, had previously said that she would not run in the election if she were required to wear an ankle tag.
