Massive crowds attend Ayatollah Khamenei's funeral in Qom
Thousands fill the streets of the Shiite religious center after Tehran farewell, with ceremonies continuing ahead of his burial in Mashhad.
Massive crowds gathered in the streets of Qom, south of Tehran, on Tuesday, marking the fourth day of funeral ceremonies for the former Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, after millions participated in his farewell ceremony in the Iranian capital.
Khamenei’s coffin, who was assassinated in U.S.-Israeli strikes on the Islamic Republic on February 28, was placed at the Jamkaran Mosque in Qom, a city known for its major Shiite religious seminaries, shrines, and holy sites.
Footage broadcast by Iranian state television showed the streets of the city, which has a population of around 1.5 million, filled with participants attending the funeral ceremony.

During the prayer led by 93-year-old Ayatollah Abdullah Javadi Amoli, crowds chanted in unison, “Death to America!”, a slogan frequently raised during official ceremonies in the Islamic Republic.
Other footage showed people, including turbaned clerics, paying their respects to Khamenei’s coffin, alongside the coffins of several family members who died with him, including his 14-month-old granddaughter, according to Iranian authorities.

On Monday, massive crowds of Iranians took to the streets of Tehran to participate in Khamenei’s farewell funeral procession, in a ceremony authorities presented as a display of strength and unity following six months of popular protests against the government and rising living costs.
The scenes of large crowds filling Tehran’s streets recalled the funeral procession of Imam Khomeini in 1989.

The funeral procession is scheduled to continue to Iraq to visit the shrines of Imam Ali in Najaf and Imam Hussein in Karbala, before returning to Iran, where Khamenei’s body will be buried on July 9 in his hometown of Mashhad, in the northeast, next to the shrine of Imam Ali Reza.
