Iran is witnessing, for the fourth consecutive day, the funeral ceremonies for the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, with large public turnout and tight security measures. Friday was reserved for official delegations, while public crowds began arriving on Saturday.

This morning, Monday, the funeral procession began in the streets of the capital, Tehran, in a final farewell ceremony expected to last about ten hours, as shown in live footage broadcast by Iranian state television.

Iran’s Radio and TV Authority (IRIB) reported via Telegram that “the funeral procession of the pure body of the martyr leader and Imam started moments ago in the capital,” noting the participation of “large crowds” of mourners.

Khamenei was killed on the first day of the American-Israeli war on Iran on February 28.

Meanwhile, General Hassan Hassan Zadeh said, “We ask the public to calmly head towards Azadi Square,” where the procession is set to arrive, amid fears of deadly stampedes like that which occurred in 1989 during the funeral of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Khamenei’s predecessor.

Israel Ready to Respond to Any 'Threat'

In this context, Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz confirmed today that “Israel killed the Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.” He stated: “Khamenei, whose funeral ceremony is currently underway, was killed by Israel because he initiated and led a plan aimed at destroying it,” adding that his country “will kill any Iranian leader planning to destroy Israel.”

Katz indicated that Israel “is ready to defend again and at any time against any threat,” stressing “the readiness of the military institution to handle various scenarios.”

On another note, indirect talks between Washington and Tehran are scheduled to resume after the funeral ceremonies, as announced by negotiators, following a round of talks in Doha aimed at putting a final end to the war in the Middle East.
