Israeli incursions and shelling escalate in southern Syria amid tensions in Daraa and Quneitra
Israeli activity in southern Syria has increased since December 2024, with reported strikes and clashes in Daraa and Quneitra.
The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday condemned Israeli incursions and shelling in the south of the country, a day after an escalation in a village in Daraa governorate that led residents to flee at night, according to local and official sources.
The village of Abdeen witnessed tension on Sunday after Israeli forces entered it, prompting residents to try to block the path of one of the patrols with stones. Israel responded with artillery shelling, which forced the villagers to flee at night to nearby villages, according to official media and a local official.
In a statement on Monday, the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned in the strongest terms the Israeli attacks represented by incursions inside Syrian territory in the governorates of Quneitra and Daraa and the targeting of the area with artillery shells, considering them a flagrant violation of Syrian sovereignty and its territorial integrity.
The governorates of Daraa and Quneitra have witnessed, since the overthrow of the rule of the deposed president Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, Israeli incursions and movements that have crossed the demilitarized buffer zone in the Golan, and their pace has increased in recent weeks.
The Israeli army announced on Sunday that its forces had carried out on Saturday the “elimination of a number of armed men” in the security area in southern Syria, without mentioning the location or specifying the number of those killed.
