New diplomatic Mechanism involving Iran, U.S. and Lebanon sparks confusion over first meeting timeline

Reports claim an upcoming “mechanism committee” session in Islamabad/Doha involving Iran, the United States, Lebanon, Qatar, and Pakistan—while Lebanese officials say no representative has been formally appointed yet, casting doubt on the meeting’s timing and legitimacy.

Sources from the “Shiite duo” leaked in the afternoon that the head of the Iranian negotiating delegation, Chairman of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, informed Speaker Nabih Berri during a phone call about the situation in Lebanon and briefed him on the atmosphere of the Islamabad negotiations.

It was mentioned that the new mechanism committee, with the membership of Iran, the United States, Lebanon, Qatar, and Pakistan, will hold its first session “in the coming hours.” The report added that the Israeli framework agreement with the Lebanese authority is considered by Iran as if it does not exist.

The meeting of the new mechanism committee was regarded as confirmation of keeping Lebanon on the agenda of the Switzerland track and within the Islamabad understanding mediated by Pakistan.

However, a source familiar with the situation told Annahar that there is no meeting scheduled for the committee in the coming hours or days so far, as Lebanon has not appointed its representative to the committee, and therefore the meeting cannot be held without him.

The same source also stated that if the meeting is held in Doha, the Lebanese ambassador has not been informed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or any official body of any mandate to participate.
