Climate Change Behind Record Temperatures

A rapid study by the World Weather Attribution group concludes that Europe’s record‑breaking heat wave would have been “virtually impossible” without human‑induced climate change. Extreme heat events are now up to 200 times more likely than two decades ago, scientists warn.

Germany Breaks Records

  • Friday: Saarbrücken recorded 41.3 °C — Germany’s highest June temperature ever.

  • Weekend Forecast: The German Weather Service (DWD) predicts up to 42 °C in eastern regions, with thunderstorms and hail possible in central and northern areas.

  • Nationwide Impact: Most of Germany will face temperatures between 32 and 38 °C.

Heat Dome Shifts East

The World Meteorological Organization reports the heat dome will move toward Central Europe and the Balkans.

  • Czech Republic & Hungary: Red alerts issued, with temperatures up to 40 °C.

  • Hungary: Authorities preparing millions of bags of drinking water.

  • Serbia: Despite the heat, a major political rally is scheduled in Belgrade.

Western Europe Sees Temporary Relief

France, Switzerland, and the UK also broke June records. Britain logged its hottest June day three times in a row, with 36.9 °C in Suffolk. Relief is expected as the heat shifts eastward.

Balkans Brace for Extreme Heat

Croatia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia face highs of 39 °C.

  • Adriatic Coast: Red weather warnings issued.

  • Sea Temperatures: Croatia’s waters reached 27 °C in Pula.

  • Serbia: The past three summers have been the hottest since records began in 1951.

Public Events Disrupted

  • France: Paris Pride postponed until September; Lyon Pride canceled.

  • Netherlands: Defqon.1 music festival canceled, with 50,000 campers asked to leave.

  • Belgium: Waterloo battle reenactment halted.Authorities warn healthcare systems are overstretched.

Human Toll Rising

  • France: 55 drownings reported since the start of the heat wave, mostly in unsupervised swimming spots.

  • Germany: Hospitals struggle with limited air conditioning, leaving patients vulnerable.

  • Across Europe: Experts stress that deadly heat waves are becoming the new normal.
