President Joseph Aoun told a British parliamentary delegation that Lebanon “looks forward to the continued support of Britain and its backing of Lebanon’s efforts to maintain an international presence in the south after the start of the withdrawal of UNIFIL at the beginning of 2027.”

He added: “Work is ongoing to consolidate the ceasefire in southern Lebanon, to be followed by the withdrawal of Israeli forces, the deployment of the Lebanese army, the return of residents, the release of prisoners, and the start of reconstruction efforts.” He noted that “the designation of model areas is still under discussion pending Israeli approval.”

Aoun also indicated that “negotiations in Washington are ongoing and separate from what was issued following last week’s meetings in Switzerland between the United States and Iran, with Qatari and Pakistani follow up.”

In other activity at Baabda Palace, Aoun discussed the security situation in Lebanon in general, and particularly in the south in light of the announcement of the ceasefire, with the Minister of National Defense Michel Menassa. They also discussed the condition of the military institution and its needs.
