Iran, US, Qatar and Pakistan to hold four party talks in Switzerland

Tehran says the meeting is part of efforts to implement last week's memorandum of understanding with Washington, following consultations with Qatari and Pakistani mediators.

Amid anticipation ahead of the first round of talks between the United States and Iran, scheduled to take place in Switzerland today with the participation of a Pakistani delegation, the Iranian news agency Fars quoted a military source as saying that the Strait of Hormuz remains closed.

The source noted that the naval forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps have not authorized the passage of any vessels through the strait and that this position will remain in effect until further notice.

The United States and Iran had previously agreed to a 60-day ceasefire as a prelude to negotiations aimed at ending the war. However, yesterday, Saturday, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz in response to the continued Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon. Meanwhile, the US military stated that commercial shipping traffic through the strait remains ongoing.

In the same context, Iranian state media quoted Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei as saying that a four-party meeting involving Iran, the United States, Qatar, and Pakistan will be held this Sunday afternoon at the mountain resort of Bürgenstock in Switzerland.

Baghaei explained that Iran will hold separate meetings with the two mediators, Qatar and Pakistan, earlier today ahead of the four-party meeting, which he said is part of ongoing efforts to implement the memorandum of understanding signed with the United States last week.
