President Aoun condemns Israeli escalation, pushes for comprehensive ceasefire

Joseph Aoun says expanding Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon and the Beqaa threaten ceasefire efforts, urging swift negotiations to end the war and pave the way for troop deployment, prisoner returns, and an Israeli withdrawal.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the ongoing Israeli escalation, saying that “what we are witnessing today in southern Lebanon and the Beqaa Valley — expanding Israeli attacks, increased killing, and further destruction — constitutes a serious and condemnable escalation, particularly as it has affected dozens of innocent civilians, including women and children.

It also effectively undermines all ongoing efforts to secure a ceasefire and end the war, especially in light of the recent developments between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

Aoun stressed that “this will not deter efforts to achieve a comprehensive ceasefire as quickly as possible. I have instructed the Lebanese negotiating delegation heading to Washington for the upcoming round of talks to prioritize this issue."

"We cannot afford any leniency on this matter, as a comprehensive ceasefire is the gateway to discussing other key issues, foremost among them the Israeli withdrawal, the deployment of the Lebanese Army, and the return of prisoners.”
