UNIFIL peacekeepers caught in the line of fire amid escalating conflicts in Lebanon
Since October 2023, UNIFIL has faced repeated attacks leading to casualties and making this one of its most dangerous periods since 2006.
Dozens of personnel from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) have lost their lives so far since the 2024 "Support for Gaza" war and the subsequent 2026 "Khamenei" war.
Lebanese civilians are not the only ones paying the price. Peacekeeping troops have also been caught in the line of fire, often becoming targets of attacks and violence.
As of June 2026, these are the victims and their nationalities:
During the 2026 War
• Three Indonesian soldiers: All three were killed in March 2026 in separate incidents. Two died when an improvised explosive device targeted a logistical patrol near Bani Hayyan, while the third was killed after a shell struck their base in Taybeh. A preliminary United Nations investigation relied on information suggesting "Israeli responsibility," indicating that "an Israeli tank caused the death of one of the soldiers."
• One Serbian peacekeeper: He died in June 2026 after sustaining severe injuries when mortar shells hit his position near Marjayoun.
• A seventh peacekeeper whose identity remains unknown to this day: He was killed in a separate incident during the preceding months, bringing the total number of fatalities to seven. While the name of the seventh soldier has not been officially disclosed, UNIFIL continues its investigations, in cooperation with the relevant authorities, to determine the circumstances surrounding these attacks.
During the 2024 War
• 29 October 2023: One international peacekeeper was injured after shells struck UNIFIL headquarters in Naqoura and Houla during exchanges of fire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah. No official responsibility was established.
• 30 March 2024: Three international observers and a Lebanese translator were injured following an explosion near a foot patrol of international observers in Rmeish.
• 18 August 2024: Three international peacekeepers were injured after an explosion occurred near a UNIFIL vehicle in Yarin.
• October 2024: A rocket attack targeted UNIFIL headquarters in Naqoura, injuring eight personnel.
• Two French soldiers: They were killed in April 2025 in an attack that French authorities and the United Nations attributed to Hezbollah.
Those targeted during the two wars were of Australian, Chilean, Norwegian, French, Serbian, and Indonesian nationalities.
Since 8 October 2023, UNIFIL has been exposed to dozens of incidents involving direct and indirect shelling, explosions near patrols, and damage to its headquarters and forward positions.
This period is considered one of the most dangerous phases faced by the international force since the July 2006 war, as it moved from recording isolated injuries in 2023 and 2024 to suffering fatalities among its ranks in 2026.
