UNIFIL announced on Thursday that a peacekeeping soldier has died from severe injuries sustained after mortar shells landed on his position near Marjayoun in southeastern Lebanon.

It added that “two other soldiers were injured in the incident and are currently receiving treatment at a medical facility inside the UNIFIL base.”

It clarified that “the soldier who sustained critical injuries was airlifted to a hospital in Beirut shortly after the incident, before later being pronounced dead due to his injuries.”

UNIFIL extended its condolences to the soldier’s family and colleagues, and wished a speedy recovery for the injured, affirming that an investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances of the incident.

It noted a significant recent increase in projectiles falling in southern Lebanon, stressing that “violence must be halted.”

It called on all parties to adhere to international law and to ensure the safety of United Nations personnel, warning that deliberate attacks on peacekeeping forces constitute a serious violation and may amount to war crimes.

It stated: “Deliberate attacks on peacekeeping forces constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law and UN Security Council Resolution 1701, and may amount to war crimes.”
