Amid ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran, journalistic reports have revealed that “the American administration is considering limited escalation options while maintaining the existing de-escalation track.”

The Wall Street Journal quoted American officials as saying that “President Donald Trump secretly informed his aides that he might reconsider the ceasefire with Iran and could resume a full-scale confrontation if any Iranian attacks result in the death of American soldiers.”

Adhering to De-escalation Despite Tensions

According to officials, “Trump remains committed to the current truce, despite ongoing limited confrontations and reciprocal attacks between the two sides in recent weeks, which have increased pressure on the US administration.”

The report noted that “these developments raise questions about the ability of the ceasefire to endure in the upcoming phase.”

Towards a Potential Agreement?

Conversely, the report indicated that “Trump still believes in the possibility of reaching a comprehensive agreement with Iran, addressing the Iranian nuclear program and enriched uranium stockpile, in addition to reopening the Strait of Hormuz.”

The newspaper suggested that “Trump’s stance reflects a desire to avoid slipping into a wide-scale war in the Middle East, while keeping the option of limited military response open in case of direct targeting of American forces.”

The region has witnessed exchanges of attacks between the United States and Iran in recent days, while ongoing tensions over the Strait of Hormuz continue to affect global energy and trade markets.
