Dubai to launch smart medical visa to boost medical tourism and digital healthcare integration
Dubai is set to introduce a smart medical treatment visa aimed at streamlining patient access to healthcare services while strengthening its position as a global hub for medical tourism through integrated digital health and residency systems.
Dubai intends to launch a smart medical treatment visa as part of its plan to strengthen its position as a regional and global hub for medical tourism, in a move that reflects the emirate’s direction toward integrating healthcare services with the digital residency and visa system.
The initiative falls under a cooperation agreement signed between the General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai and the Dubai Health Authority, with the aim of improving the experience of patients coming to the emirate for treatment and facilitating procedures related to their residence and mobility.
The Dubai Government Media Office stated, via a social media post, that the partnership aims to enhance integration between residency, visa services, and healthcare services, contributing to improving the efficiency of services provided to patients and visitors.
For its part, the Dubai Health Authority indicated that the areas of cooperation include strengthening electronic linkage with the health insurance system, in addition to launching proactive services dedicated to patients, which will speed up procedures and reduce the time needed to obtain treatment services.
This step comes as Dubai continues to invest in the medical tourism sector, which has become one of the growing drivers of the emirate’s service-based economy.
Medical visas in the UAE currently allow stays of 90 or 180 days, whether for single or multiple entries, providing greater flexibility for patients arriving from abroad to continue treatment or undergo specialized medical examinations.
Economic indicators highlight the importance of this sector, as the latest data from the Dubai Health Authority showed that medical tourism generated revenues of approximately 1 billion UAE dirhams (about 272 million US dollars) in 2022, an increase of more than 25 percent compared to the previous period, confirming the growing demand for specialized medical services in the emirate.
Observers believe that the launch of the smart medical visa will enhance Dubai’s competitiveness in the global medical tourism market by facilitating the patient’s journey from obtaining the visa to receiving treatment, within an integrated digital system that combines healthcare and administrative services in a unified framework.
