The Egyptian-Israeli border has reignited with military maneuvers. Tel Aviv launched the “Sulfur and Fire” drills just days after Cairo’s “Badr 2026” exercises. This is more than mere verbal skirmishes. The land in the Middle East is speaking the language of iron and fire… So what is being cooked up in secret?!

Zero Hour!

At dawn last Friday, the Israeli army, under the supervision of the Chief of Staff, launched massive surprise maneuvers with a telling name: “Sulfur and Fire,” along the borders with Egypt and Jordan. Special units were air-dropped, military units were mobilized, and settlement protection battalions were called up; scenarios simulating the eruption of multiple fronts at the same time.

The newspaper Maariv confirmed that an exercise of this scale does not resemble traditional drills but rather looks like a test to measure the Israeli army’s ability to rapidly transition from daily routine to a large-scale, high-intensity war within "zero hour," in order to avoid a repeat of the shock of October 7, 2023. This reflects concern over changes in the surrounding security environment and shows the level of tension dominating the Israeli mindset at present. Tel Aviv no longer views its borders with Jordan and Egypt as quiet areas. Therefore, these maneuvers are not directly related to the war on Iran; they are also a message of reassurance to settlers in border areas that Tel Aviv is at maximum readiness to confront any threat or emergency in any strategic direction.

This Israeli state of alert cannot be understood in isolation from the firm messages recently sent by Cairo. Hebrew reports via the “Natsiv Net” platform are still reacting to the shock of the massive Badr 2026 exercises carried out by the Egyptian army in the heart of Sinai. Reports say that 40,000 Egyptian soldiers, 88 combat battalions, and hundreds of armored vehicles were positioned just meters from the Israeli border fence, in one of Egypt’s largest military drills in recent years. Israeli analysts considered it a potential threat and a scenario for a future war. As a result, members of the Knesset called for firm measures against Cairo, in a growing escalation of incitement rhetoric inside Israel toward Egypt.

A New Strategic Balance

In the same context, military circles in Tel Aviv were gripped by widespread anger after leaked intelligence reports confirmed Cairo’s success in acquiring the formidable European air-to-air Meteor missile for its French Rafale fighters jets. This major development overturns Israeli calculations and threatens Israel’s qualitative edge and air superiority in the region’s skies. Therefore, Natsiv Net warned of the erosion of Israeli deterrence and its ability to prevent key Arab states from acquiring first-rate military technology.

Taken together, the data suggests that the entire region is standing on a hot powder keg. The mutual exercises are no longer routine drills but strategic deterrence messages with live ammunition. The nature of these movements says a great deal. Since the start of the Gaza war after October 7, 2023, Egypt has been closely monitoring what it considers Israeli violations of the peace treaty between the two countries, including the arrival of Israeli forces at the Philadelphi Corridor, which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu inspected among his troops, alongside his call to displace Palestinians into Sinai. However, this Israeli probing did not pass quietly. The rules have changed and now resemble the saying: depth for depth and breach for breach, without noise, as you cannot draw lines that others are able to erase.

Through the “Badr” maneuvers and others, Egypt was not sending offensive messages, but it has consistently affirmed that it has an army capable of rapid deployment and of imposing balance regardless of challenges. This has led Israel to constantly reassess its calculations and closely monitor any Egyptian move, especially given the development of the Egyptian army in terms of weaponry, technology, and readiness, as well as its growing ability to manage complex theaters of operations simultaneously and its success in building a deterrent force capable of protecting national security. This transformation has proven that Egyptian sovereignty and military power are not open to compromise or to remaining in the shadows.

Peace is the Companion of Strength

The existence of a military force of this size and capability makes any party think carefully before approaching Egypt’s national security lines. Although Cairo consistently maintains a balanced and peaceful rhetoric that supports regional stability and rejects escalation, as stated by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, it also always emphasizes that “peace requires power to protect it.”

In contrast, Tel Aviv possesses some of the most advanced conventional and non-conventional weapons arsenals in the world. However, it is closely and anxiously monitoring developments near Egypt’s borders, viewing them as a potential front that could ignite at any time, especially amid the increasing complexity of the regional landscape and fears of a “multi-front war.” This helps explain its sudden “Sulfur and Fire” maneuvers and shows that the Middle East is living through an extremely sensitive phase; every military exercise or movement by any side carries political and security messages sent directly to the other party, messages deeper than routine training. The hard language of power, “live ammunition exercises,” is present in everyone’s calculations, and it will have consequences, as the situation remains unresolved and the door is still open.
