The long-running saga surrounding the future of Barcelona veteran star Robert Lewandowski may be nearing its end.

The 37-year-old striker’s contract ends with the current season, and his next step has been a subject of anticipation for some time, following his La Liga title win.

Although Barcelona are open to keeping Lewandowski for an additional season, it would be on a reduced salary and with a smaller role in the squad, something that does not satisfy the Polish striker.

Hence, reports from Poland suggest Lewandowski is likely to leave, and he may end up moving to the Saudi League.

Is Lewandowski headed to Al Hilal Saudi?

According to Polish journalist Jarosław Koliński, Lewandowski has received a formal and direct offer from Saudi club Al Hilal, and he is close to accepting it.

Although no agreement has been signed yet and the situation could still change, the Saudi club is currently considered the most advanced party in negotiations with the captain of the Polish national team.

According to the report, Al Hilal have offered Lewandowski an annual salary of €90 million, a figure that would place him among the highest-paid players in world football.

Why might Lewandowski choose Al Hilal Saudi?

From Lewandowski’s perspective, the move offers several benefits beyond the financial aspect.

Al Hilal has one of the strongest squads in Saudi football, featuring international names such as Darwin Núñez and Karim Benzema, with the team coached by Simone Inzaghi.

The club’s sporting project is seen as competitive, and although Al Hilal is currently trailing behind Al Nassr, led by Cristiano Ronaldo, in the Saudi League standings, the team remains unbeaten this season and is only five points behind its rival with a game in hand.

Recent international performances have further boosted Al Hilal’s appeal, especially after reaching the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup.

At the age of 37, it is said that Lewandowski is carefully considering maintaining his physical readiness while continuing to represent the Polish national team, from which he does not intend to retire internationally.

Those close to the player believe he understands that continuing for an additional full season under high physical demands and intense training at Barcelona could have physical repercussions.

Hence, Saudi Arabia is seen as a middle ground offering him exactly what he needs at this stage of his career: relatively lighter physical demands, with the guarantee of regular playing time.

This balance may allow him to maintain his fitness and his place in the Polish national team for upcoming international commitments.
