A spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today, Monday, that Beijing will seek to ensure “more stability” in international relations during the scheduled summit between the Chinese and American presidents this week.

The spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, said in a press briefing: “China intends to work with the United States on an equal footing, in a spirit of respect and attention to common interests, aiming to develop cooperation, manage differences, and secure more stability in an interconnected and unstable world.”

He considered that “high-level diplomacy plays an unprecedented strategic role in Sino-American relations.”

Beijing confirmed today the visit of President Donald Trump from Wednesday to Friday.

It is expected that trade relations will dominate the discussions between the two presidents, though the ongoing U.S.–Israeli war with Iran is also likely to be addressed.

This visit will be the first by an American president to China since 2017.

Beijing had long refrained from confirming the date of Donald Trump’s visit, in line with customary practice for official visits, particularly given the ongoing Middle East crisis.
