Geagea: Rejecting state-led negotiations is a rejection of Lebanon itself

The head of the Lebanese Forces party, Samir Geagea, commented on repeated statements that “some are not concerned with any negotiations Lebanon conducts or any agreements it undertakes,” saying: “To those people we say: we are not concerned with your words or with anything you do, except that it has brought disasters upon Lebanon and the Lebanese people.”

In a statement, Geagea affirmed that Lebanon has a parliament that is democratically and genuinely elected and that represents the Lebanese people in the best possible way.

He noted that this parliament elected President Joseph Aoun with 99 votes out of 128 and later granted confidence to the current government twice in a row with more than a two thirds majority.

Accordingly, he said, those who represent the Lebanese people are the President of the Republic and the government, each within the powers granted to them by the constitution.

He added: “To those who say they are not concerned with legitimate and constitutional negotiations carried out by the President of the Republic in cooperation and solidarity with the Prime Minister and the government, they are essentially saying that they reject Lebanon as a state, reject the majority of the Lebanese people, and ultimately reject Lebanon as a homeland.”

He concluded: “Whoever does not acknowledge what the legitimate President of Lebanon and the legitimate government are doing does not acknowledge the existence of a state in Lebanon. It remains for the officials of the Lebanese state to act accordingly.”
