Host country

The 2018 FIFA World Cup is being hosted in Russia after it was awarded the hosting rights on December 2, 2010. The 21st edition of the flagship tournament will take place from June 14 until July 15, 2018 as 32 teams battle it out for the most coveted prize in international football. This is the first World Cup to be held in Europe since Germany hosted the 2006 tournament where Italy emerged victorious in the final against France. The tournament is also projected to be the most expensive tournament in history with its budget expected to exceed that of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. A total of 64 matches will be played in 12 venues located in 11 cities with the final taking place at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow on July 15.
