BEIRUT: The Head of Lebanon’s General Labor Confederation Bechara Asmar submitted Monday his resignation, capping off a whirlwind weekend that saw his meteoric fall following lewd comments made regarding the late Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Mar Nasrallah Boutros Sfeir.

Asmar, who was detained Saturday on charges of threatening civil peace and stirring sectarian tensions, signed his resignation while behind bars.

Unaware that the microphone was already on prior to a televised news conference, his comments were inadvertently recorded in a video leaked Friday in which he made an obscene joke about the recently deceased Sfeir.

Offended Lebanese, current Maronite Patriarch Beshara Rahi, and the country's largest rival Christian parties, the Free Patriotic Movement and the Lebanese Forces, sternly condemned his comments and asked for his resignation.

The FPM, headed by Foreign Minister and President Michel Aoun's son-in-law Gebran Bassil, has quickly sought to replace Asmar, a figure close to Speaker Nabih Berri.

The FPM's relation with Berri has long been tense with Bassil calling the speaker a "thug" in his own blunder involving a leaked video last year.
