BEIRUT: The U.S. Embassy in Lebanon is advising U.S. citizens of heightened tensions in the region, reflecting worsening strains between Washington and Tehran.

The advisory was sent to U.S citizens Wednesday and called on them to "maintain a high level of vigilance and practice good situational awareness."

Lebanon is home to Hezbollah, Iran's biggest and most influential proxy in the region.

The militant group has most recently fought a month-long war with Israel in the summer of 2006.

The United States and Tehran have been trading blows in recent days, with tensions ramping up in the wake of Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen hitting an oil pipeline that runs across Saudi Arabia Tuesday.

This came after the US deployed an aircraft carrier strike group and B-52 bombers into the region, while Iran threatened to enrich uranium to weapons-grade levels.
