BEIRUT: Court of Appeals Judge Zeinab Fakih ordered Friday the release of Rashid Jumblatt a day after he was arrested on defamation charges against Free Patriotic Movement leader and caretaker Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil.

Jumblatt was arrested by members of the State Security a month after he was sentenced to six months in prison and ordered to pay a fine of LBP 10 million by criminal Judge Karma Haseki.

The campaign for his release was spearheaded by both Progressive Socialist Party chief Walid Jumblatt and his political foe Tawheed party leader Wiam Wahhab.

Rashid is a former member of the Tawheed Party, a movement led by Wahhab and consisting mostly of Druze supporters.

In a tweet published Thursday night, moments after Rachid was arrested, Wahab demanded the release of his former party member to "avoid a spillover on the streets."
