BEIRUT: Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri travelled to Russia Wednesday where he is set to meet with President Vladamir Putin ahead of the launch of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Hariri will hold talks with the President of the Kremlin over the recent developments in the region, most notably the Syrian civil war which has ravaged the country since 2011.

Russia is deeply invested in Syria, having sent troops, equipment and weapons to shore up Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces.

Hariri is also expected to attend the opening match of the World Cup alongside other heads of states, which will pit hosts Russia against Saudi Arabia.
