BEIRUT: Mount Lebanon's Court of Publications convicted Thursday TV host and personality Joe Maalouf on charges of defamation and slander over a 2015 episode of his show during which he reportedly put forth false accusations regarding current Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil's accumulated wealth and real estate properties.

The LBCI host of 'Hawa el 7orriyeh' came under fire in the aftermath of the November 11, 2015 episode after Gebran Bassil filed a lawsuit against him, with the court siding with the Foreign Minister.

Judge Elie Helou suspended a three-year jail sentence while fining Maalouf LBP 500,000 and LBB 20,000,000 in damages to Bassil. Local media reported that this amount would be donated by Bassil to Lebanon's local red cross.
