BEIRUT: Palestinian singer, songwriter, and composer Rim Banna died Saturday in her hometown of Nazareth in Israel after battling breast cancer for nine years.
Banna’s family members confirmed the 51-year-old’s death through a statement on social media.
The statement said Banna passed away in the early hours of Saturday morning.
"Rim Banna's family, including her mother Zouhaira, her brother Firas, and her children Baylasan, Ursalem and Qamran, as well as her friends … convey the deeply saddening news of the departure of their daughter and Palestine's renowned singer Rim Banna," her brother Firas wrote in a Facebook post.
Banna is the daughter of a well-known Palestinian poet, Zouhaira Sabbagh, who wrote on her Facebook page, "she departed and left behind her bright smile that illuminated her beautiful face."
A flurry of her fans flocked on social media to offer their condolences to Banna and her family, and remembering her by sharing their favorite songs.
Banna was diagnosed with breast cancer back in 2009, and lost her ability to sing in 2016 stating that she was stepping down but would carry on composing and creating music.
The artist performed patriotic music that called for the end of the Israeli occupation in Palestine
