BEIRUT: A video has surfaced on social media of dogs shivering, gasping for breath and foaming at the mouth in Beirut's southern of Ghobeiry. The heartbreaking video has been going viral on social media every since its release on Thursday. In the wake of the incident, municipal officers claimed that the dogs were aggressive and noisy and had to be put down, according to what was told to animal welfare organizations.
In the video, the stray dogs showed signs of fatal poisoning with food served in boxes placed nearby.
Animals Lebanon Executive Director Jason Mier told Annahar that the incident is the latest in a series of “absolutely unnecessary and unproductive” measures. In fact, these actions are “counter-productive” and illegal, Mier added, in reference to the animal welfare law recently signed by President Michel Aoun.
Mier said the municipal employee responsible for poisoning the dogs was arrested but it remains unclear whether he was detained for acting without the municipal council's approval or for violating the animal welfare law.
Mier added that a delegation from Animals Lebanon will meet with the Minister of Interior next week to discuss the issue.
“We have also contacted the general prosecutor; some things we were able to get done this morning, and some things need more time,” Mier said.
The head of Ghobeiry’s Municipality Maen al Khalil told Annahar that he had not authorized the killing of stray dogs and has tasked the local police with investigating the issue.
