BEIRUT: Saudi Arabia extended on Wednesday an official invitation to Maronite Patriarch Beshara Rai to take place in the following weeks, the latest in a series of developments encompassing both countries in recent days.

Patriach Rai’s invitation comes in the wake of Saudi Arabia’s Charge d’Affaires Walid Al-Bukhari visiting Bkirki, labeling Rai’s upcoming visit to the Kingdom, which would be a first by a Maronite Patriarch, as a “historical one.”

This comes in the midst of a rise in tensions between Lebanon and Saudi Arabia, following the Kingdom’s Arab Gulf Affairs Minister Thamer Al-Sabhan launching an unprecedented attack on Hezbollah, calling them “a diabolical militia”, while urging the “the Lebanese government to recognize the seriousness of the situation.”

In an attempt to instill a sense of calm and ease hostilities, Prime Minister Saad Hariri travelled to Saudi Arabia to meet with Sabhan.

After the meeting, both men took to twitter, alleviating some of the concerns, at least ostensibly.
