BEIRUT: Former MP Samir Franjieh passed away Tuesday at the age of 71 at Hotel Dieu De France hospital in Beirut, after a long battle with illness .
Born in Zgharta in 1945, Franjieh is the son of Christian political leader Hamid Franjieh, who played a pivotal role in the country’s independence.
Franjieh was a founding member of the Qornet Shehwan Gathering, which spearheaded efforts under former Maronite Patriarch Butros Sfeir to force the withdrawal of Syrian military forces from Lebanon.
A vocal critic of Syrian hegemony in Lebanon, Franjieh, among others, laid the foundations for the formation of the March 14 alliance, which took shape following the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in 2005.
Later that year, Franjieh was elected as MP.
