BEIRUT: An explosion Friday ripped through the kitchen of a restaurant in Antelias region, wounding at least 22 people and causing damage to nearby stores.

Preliminary reports indicated that the explosion was caused by a gas leak. However, security forces said investigations were still ongoing to determine the cause of the blast at the kitchen of a branch of Roadster Diner.

The branch manager said there were at least 17 employees on duty when the explosion took place.

Civil Defense Brigadier General Raymond Khattar said at least a man and a woman were in critical condition.

Security forces, firefighters and members of the Lebanese Red Cross hurled to the scene and transported at least 22 wounded to nearby hospitals. The Serhal hospital has put out a call for a blood drive.
