WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT MIGHT DISTURB SOME VIEWERS
Two horrific video clips on Youtube are circulating on Sunday, showing inmates being humiliated and terrified in the notorious Roumieh prison, beaten with some kind of pole or baton. The short clips clearly show the men in pain and scared for their lives and have angered a number of Lebanese on social media.
"What I saw was not so different than Guantanamo or Syrian prisons" argued Yasmine Ballout on Twitter, from Tripoli. "This is clearly against the law, we are not savages" before raising the more prickly point of the implications in Tripoli – as it is assumed the men are Islamists and are from the northern town which has been the flashpoint of Sunni hardcore groups of late following a crackdown earlier in the year. "I hope things won't escalate in Tripoli, because the public is boiling at the moment" she adds. "The Minister should act NOW !".
The notorious prison, which accommodates both Lebanese terrorists and those from the Arab peninsular, has made the headlines several times this year with riots, vandalism and prisoners clashing with authorities about conditions in the prison. Recently, the Interior minister said that a wing would soon be ready after renovation.
The ugly incident is precisely the sort of example of a breach of basic human rights that the EU chastises in poorer countries around the world. So far, the EU ambassador has yet to issue any statement condoning the horrific acts as neither has the media-addicted outgoing British Ambassador Tom Fletcher.
